Back pain in Pregnancy is an increasingly common problem, and it seems as if people from all age groups are now complaining about their back hurting like anything. There is no fixed reason of why your back might be aching. Pregnant women often complain about lower back pain. Back pain in early pregnancy is mostly because of the sudden increase in a woman’s weight. Sometimes stress can also cause lower back pain in pregnancy.  Even in the third trimester, women can experience back pain because the body starts preparing for labor and releases some hormones to loosen up some muscles. This causes instability in the pelvis, which puts a strain on the back muscles. Similarly, the enlargement of breast tissues also causes back pain in women who are pregnant.

Here are some ways in which you can relieve the back pain during pregnancy:

  • Maintain a good posture. Try to keep your back straight. Use a cushion to support yourself while sitting. Avoid standing for a long period of time. Similarly, maintain a neutral spine posture while sleeping.
  • Avoid lifting and carrying heavy objects. Avoid bending and even if you do bend, just make sure that you bend on your knees.
  • Avoid hard physical activity, but light exercise is good like walking and simple stretching.
  • You can also use a hot water bottle to lessen the cramps and pain.

Menstruation is undoubtedly a hard time. It may seem normal but is physically challenging and draining. Women and girls can experience back pain during periods too. During menstruation, a woman’s body produces a hormone Prostaglandin which is basically responsible for promoting uterine contraction. This hormone can have an effect on the lower back muscles. This causes dysmenorrheal or extreme menstrual cramps.

Here are some effective ways to deal with back pain in menstruation:

  • Some women take anti-inflammatory medicines to deal with these cramps.

This injection blocks the labor pains and gives some relief to the woman. Even though epidurals do not cause any long term chronic back pain, but still, the patient might feel a bit of back pain after epidural. This might be because the injection is given right in the spinal nerve, which may give an uncomfortable stinging or burning sensation in the back.

  • Drinking plenty of water is another key to preventing back pain. One should drink at least five glasses of water a day.
  • Correct posture. Make sure that you are sitting and sleeping in the correct posture.
  • Consult a doctor if the pain continues to increase.
  • Take a hot bath or massage.

  • Use support like cushions etc.
  • Don’t bend on your back; always bend on your knees.
  • You can also use pain killers if prescribed by the doctor.
